Pregnancy & Parental Leave

Parental Leave provides time away from work to bond with a newborn, newly adopted child, or foster child.

What Is Parental Leave?

Parental Leave gives you time to bond with your child following a birth, adoption, or foster placement.

You may need Parental Leave following the birth, adoption, or foster placement of a child to spend time bonding and caring for your new child.

Eligibility

Parental Leave may be available if you welcome a new child through birth, adoption, or foster placement. The amount of leave available depends on the applicable leave program.

You may also qualify for FMLA or a state paid family leave program, depending on your circumstances and eligibility.

How Does Parental Leave Work With Other Leave?

Depending on your situation, Parental Leave may be used with FMLA, Voluntary Short-Term Disability, or other applicable leave programs. These programs may run concurrently rather than one after another. Click here to learn more.

Parental Leave and Voluntary Short-Term Disability serve different purposes. Parental Leave is for bonding with your child, while Voluntary Short-Term Disability may provide income replacement when a qualifying disability prevents you from working.

Important Note

If you are planning to take Parental Leave, contact MetLife as soon as possible to begin the leave process. You should also notify your manager.

Planning For Maternity Leave

If you are giving birth, your leave may include both Medical Leave and Parental Leave. If you elected Voluntary Short-Term Disability coverage and meet the plan requirements, you may also qualify for disability benefits during the portion of your leave when pregnancy or childbirth prevents you from working.

Voluntary Short-Term Disability and Parental Leave serve different purposes. Voluntary Short-Term Disability benefits may provide income replacement when a qualifying disability prevents you from working, while Parental Leave provides time to bond with your child.
