Making Changes

Getting married? Welcoming a new baby? Life changes, and your benefits can change with you. A Qualified Life Event allows you to make certain changes to your benefits during the plan year.

Qualified Life Events

Changes can only be made during Open Enrollment or if you experience a Qualified Life Event. If you do not make changes to your benefits within 31 days of the Qualified Life Event, you will have to wait until the next Open Enrollment period to make changes unless you experience another Qualified Life Event.

Qualified Life Events include:

WatchQualifying Life Events
  • Change in your legal marital status (marriage, divorce, or legal separation)
  • Change in the number of your dependents — through birth, adoption, or if a child is no longer an eligible dependent
  • Change in your spouse’s employment status, resulting in a loss or gain of coverage
  • Gain or loss of coverage through the Marketplace
  • Gain or loss of Medicare or Medicaid
  • A court order to provide health coverage for your eligible dependent (QMCSO)
  • Turning 26 and losing coverage through a parent’s plan
  • Death in the family, leading to change in dependents or loss of coverage
  • Changes that make you no longer eligible for Medicaid or the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP)
  • Change in your employment status from full-time to part-time or part-time to full-time, resulting in a gain or loss of coverage

How to Make a Change

If you need to make a change to your benefits before the next Open Enrollment period because of a qualifying life event, such as getting married, having a baby, or losing other coverage, log in to Workday to submit your change. View step-by-step instructions for submitting a life event.
