BAYADA

Resources for People Leaders

Supporting a team member through a Leave of Absence starts with knowing where to direct them and what to expect throughout the process. Use the guidance below to help your team member navigate their leave while maintaining appropriate communication and supporting a smooth return to work.

When a Team Member Reports a Leave

  • Encourage your team member to contact MetLife as soon as possible to begin the leave process.
  • Do not try to determine whether a team member qualifies for FMLA, disability, or another leave program. MetLife and the BAYADA Leave Management office can help determine applicable leave programs and requirements.
  • If your team member shares any information with you regarding their leave, keep it private and only share with those who need to know.
  • Work with your team member to understand their anticipated absence and plan for coverage and operational needs.

While Your Team Member Is on Leave

  • Respect the leave and give your team member the time away from work they need.
  • Do not ask your team member to work while they are on leave. This includes emails, phone calls, meetings, trainings, and other work activities.
  • For intermittent leave, your team member must report the time used to both you and their MetLife claim manager.
  • Avoid asking for medical details or making decisions about whether a leave is protected or approved. Direct leave-specific questions to MetLife or Leave Management.
  • Share pertinent BAYADA or office information with your team member when they return to work rather than expecting them to keep up with work while they are out.

Preparing for Your Team Member's Return

As the return date approaches:

  • Confirm the planned return date with your team member.
  • Coordinate any required work schedule, system access, or other return-to-work needs.
  • Be prepared to review important updates that occurred during the leave.
  • Schedule time to reconnect, discuss priorities, and help your team member transition back into their role.
  • If your team member's return date changes, make sure the appropriate leave contacts are notified.
